The raw materials used by Artmorfose to manufacture its furniture come mainly from old mansions of the Brazilian states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. Floors, windows, doors, walls, anvils, etc are removed from such mansions that are being demolished and reutilized in the manufacturing of Artmorfose’s hand-made furniture. The craftsmen then prepare the demolition wood by removing nails and fixtures, grouping pieces with similar width and length and then begin to mold this old wood into pieces of furniture. These products are thus authentic, proven resistant ( the wood has been in the interior and exterior of houses for many years ) and with beautiful marks of time.
The below photos seek to convey some of the challenges the craftsmen face when they are in front of the raw material used by Artmorfose i.e the very old wood.
Robust cutting tools are required to mold the demolition wood and there is never enough attention to make sure the best “veins” and angles of the wood are captured in the piece of furniture so that the natural beauty of the specific lot of wood prevails.
There is a need to smoothen out the different pieces of demolition wood to transform them into tables, chairs, closets, etc, but with much artistic sensitivity in order to avoid eliminating entirely the irregularities and other marks that exactly render the value to the piece of furniture.
