STEPS: 01 > 03 | 04 > 06

Both machine precision for handling of big screws, mostly originals, that hold together many pieces of furniture as well manual proficiency to replicate wood junctions for instance as done in the old times is required from the craftsmen – these are the challenges.

In the coffee and sugar farms of Brazil it was quite common to fully hide the wood with paint – we can immediately picture the colonial houses in the farms for example with the typical colonial blue on all doors and window sills.

Artmorfose seeks to reconcile two aspirations - show the habit of painting over wood during the barroc period but also allow for the beauty of the noble wood to come through. Therefore, the craftsmen partially scrape the original paint and we have a charming effect of various shades of paint coexisting with the different types of wood used at the time.

Depending on the piece of furniture and the wood, the craftsmen use more of one or the other technique.

The typical baroque polychrome painting is very demanding and totally dependant on the artist's inspiration on the spot. He initially applies 7 to 8 different layers of paint in several colours , and then draws the selected baroque motifs – arabesques, birds, fruits, etc.- and finally proceeds to the aging technique and the scraping of excesses.

The photos below show 3 different stages of the process

Finally, fixtures like knobs, iron chains large old nails, etc are applied to the pieces of furniture

In essence, each piece of furniture will be differentiated due to varying types and shades of brown of the wood litself , different levels of scraping of the original patina , several shades of colours ( both of the original patina and polychrome painting ), marks of use and of time. The result is in effect a unique , exclusive piece of furniture.
